(A.D. 1189) Pope Gregory VIII calls for a Third Crusade in response to Saladin’s conquest of Jerusalem. The Third Crusade was led by several of Europe’s most important leaders, and although they failed to recapture Jerusalem, a truce was reached which permitted Christian pilgrims to access Jerusalem.
