HISTORY of Christian Theology

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels because they roughly follow the same story line in relating the life and death of Jesus’ life, so the summary or synopsis of each book will be similar to the others. The Gospel of John takes a different approach to tell the story so it is not one of the Synoptic Gospels.
