(A.D. 1870–1922) William Seymour was an African American preacher who studied under Charles Fox Parham, adopting Pentecostalism and the view that “speaking in tongues” was a sign of being baptized in the Holy Spirit. He started a revival in Los Angeles with large, racially integrated crowds, controversial religious practices, and media coverage.
