HISTORY of Christian Theology

Friedrich Schleiermacher (A.D. 1768–1834) German theologian and philosopher, minister in the Reformed church, professor at the University of Berlin (A.D. 1811–1834), and founding figure of Protestant liberalism. He was the most influential Protestant thinker of the 19th century. In response to Enlightenment efforts to rationalize religion, he argued that religion has its source in experience, or “the sense and taste for the infinite.”
