Jean-Jacque Rousseau (A.D. 1712–1778) was a philosopher born in Geneva, Switzerland. He authored The Social Contract which became a cornerstone of modern political theory, and famous for dramatic lines, such as: “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.”
