HISTORY of Christian Theology

A relatively new concept in Christian understanding regarding the end times before the second coming of Christ that is primarily followed by some branches of North American Protestants. The term generally refers to the pre-tribulation theory that that God’s elect will be raised up to heaven prior to the period of time (usually believed to be three years) when God will pour down tribulation and judgment before Christ comes in his glory to establish his kingdom on earth. This concept first became popular in the 1830’s through the preaching of John Nelson Darby and gained further credibility and wider acceptance through the influence of the Scofield Reference Bible in the early 20th century.
