Queen Elizabeth I (A.D. 1533–1603) was Queen of England and Ireland and inherited a realm wracked with religious strife caused by her father, King Henry VIII’s, establishment of the Church of England. Elizabeth was cautious, pursuing a policy of religious tolerance and inspiring personal devotion in her subjects.
