HISTORY of Christian Theology

Contrary to popular belief, the term does not refer to protest against the Roman Catholic Church. The term original refers to a formal protest lodged by Lutheran princes against an unfavorable decision made by the imperial Diet of Speyer in A.D. 1529, and later was applied to the Lutheran, Reformed and Anabaptist religions who broke from the Roman Catholic Church.
