HISTORY of Christian Theology

A religion controlled at the local level by an assembly of elders or selected representatives. See polity and presbyters. Mainstream of English Puritanism in the 17th century were Presbyterians who sought to revive the original form of church government based on a council of elders or presbyters, whom they did not consider priests. See polity.
