HISTORY of Christian Theology

An ancient Jewish sect which sought to establish strict observance of the Mosaic Law and oral tradition. Pharisees were perceived as being pretentious in their religiosity and their claims to personal righteousness. Pharisees stressed the omnipotence and foreknowledge of God while still believing in free will and personal responsibility.
