Messiah

Is synonymous with the Greek based term “Christ” that comes from the Hebrew word for “the anointed one,” referring to the king of Judaea due to their practice of anointing their kings with oil instead being crowned. Referring to Jesus as the “Messiah” or “Christ” means that he is the King of the Jews and legitimate successor of King David. Literally “the anointed one”, in Jewish tradition, messiah has referred to many individuals anointed with oil. It has also come to be used in connection with an anticipated Jewish king descended from King David. Christianity considers Jesus to be this messiah, but his kingdom is not of this world.
