(c. A.D. 1275–1342) Marsilius wrote the political treatise Defensor pacis in 1324 which contested Papal claims to political power and laid the foundations for modern concepts of sovereignty. He argued for a form of republicanism where sovereignty lies with the people and legitimacy is achieved through democratic elections.
