(A.D. 121–180) Marcus Aurelius was Roman Emperor from A.D. 161 until his death in 180. He was renowned for his philosophical thinking and temperance, and he was highly successful in his military campaigns and governance. Persecution of Christians by local officials increased during Marcus’ reign.
