John the Baptist (c. 1 B.C.–c. A.D. 30) was a Jewish preacher and prophet, Jesus’s cousin, he taught salvation through a coming messiah, and he used baptism as a major sacrament to symbolize the beginning of a person’s new life devoted to living right with God.
