(A.D. 1920–2005) Born Karol Wojtyla, Polish priest, philosophy professor, archbishop of Krakow (A.D. 1963–1978) then pope (A.D. 1978–2005) in the second longest pontificate in history, important theologically for his theology of the body, his defense of long standing Catholic doctrines and practices (such as not ordaining women to the priesthood) and his advocacy of a philosophically-informed Christian humanism.
