(Died A.D. 31 Jul 1556) Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish military officer who experienced a religious conversion while recovering from injuries. He founded the Jesuit religious order (Society of Jesus) that was dedicated to discipline and education. Jesuits stressed absolute loyalty to the Pope and were zealous opponents to the Protestant Reformation.
