Herod Antipater (c. 4 B.C.–A.D. 39) ruled over Galilee and Perea, the regions of Judea where Jesus was most active in his ministry. Herod imprisoned John the Baptist out of fear of rebellion due to John’s public disapproval of Herod’s incestuous marriage. Herod later had John beheaded.
