Galileo Galilei (A.D. 1564–1642) was an Italian Renaissance-era scientist who strongly advocated for the Copernican heliocentric model of the universe. This led to his being tried by the Inquisition for heresy and he was forced to recant. He is most commonly remembered today for his work regarding gravity.
