HISTORY of Christian Theology

is a Christian church’s formal expulsion of a baptized member from that religious community. The term is derived the official act of refusing a person to participate in communion of the Lord’s Supper. In the early church bishops often excommunicated other bishops and their communities that disagreed with the first bishop. In the Middle Ages this judgment was reserved to the Pope.
