The cross (i.e., the shape of the letter “t” or “T”) was used by Romans to impose capital punishment by affixing the victim to it and leaving them to eventually die from exhaustion and asphyxiation. The cross was used to kill Jesus, and thereafter became a symbol of Christianity.
