(c. 215–164 B.C.) Antiochus IV was king of the Seleucid Empire. He essentially conquered Egypt but backed off in the face of pressure from Rome. During his reign, the Maccabees revolted and established an independent Judea, reestablishing traditional Jewish religious practices.
