Alfred the Great (c. A.D. 847–899) was King of Wessex who, in the face of Viking invasions of the British Isles, became the first King of the Anglo-Saxons. He halted the Viking advances in England, established peace, and oversaw the conversion of the Viking leader Guthrum to Christianity.
